Even a broad form liability policy must be expanded to address several significant church-related risks:
- Pastoral counseling liability, the risk of physical or emotional injury attributed to a priest's acts, errors or omissions during pastoral counseling (i.e., a couple alleges that marital counseling injured their relationship).
- Sexual misconduct liability, the risk of physical or emotional injury because of sexual abuse, molestation or exploitation.
- Cemetery liability, the risk of physical or emotional injury because of an act or omission in connection with cremation, burial, disinterment or temporary care of any deceased human body (i.e., ashes held for safekeeping are misplaced).
- Teachers' liability, the risk of bodily injury or property damage arising out of teaching activities, including the use of corporal punishment.
Tip: Be sure your liability insurance protects against these church-specific risks.
