Active clergy
Clergy are automatically enrolled in Short Term Disability Insurance if they are actively working in a church institution, are canonically resident in the United States, and their pension assessment payments to the Church Pension Fund are up-to-date.
Clergy do not have to answer any medical questions or produce evidence of insurability.
When beginning a new position after a break in service (or following ordination or reception), the cleric is covered as soon as we receive his or her first pension assessment payment.
Lay employees
To enroll in Short Term Disability Insurance, a lay employee must be:
- an active employee of an Episcopal Church organization, and
- employed at least 20 hours a week for pay.
An employee is covered for disability from the first day an employer enrolls that person in the plan. Enrollments should be made within 60 days after hiring.
Enrollments after 60 days require a health statement and are processed by First UNUM Life Insurance Company.
