Damage from fire, wind and water are among the most frequent perils, or causes of loss, for many churches. But these are only a few of the potential threats facing church property daily. Two kinds of property insurance policies are generally available:
- The "Named Perils" contract insures only against specifically-listed perils, such as fire and lightning; windstorm and hail; vandalism and malicious mischief; sudden and accidental smoke damage; building damage by burglars; and others.
- The "All Risk" contract insures against all perils except those that are specifically excluded. Unlike a Named Perils policy, common causes of loss include burglary and theft of property; glass breakage; and water back-up from sewers and drains.
