When employees pay the premium...
They may choose:
- Replacement of 25% compensation with maximum of $5,000 per month
- Replacement of 50% compensation with maximum of $5,000 per month
When the employee pays, the plan does not reduce benefits for those with disability benefits through Social Security or other plans, such as the Church Pension Fund's retirement disability benefit for clergy.
According to First UNUM Life Insurance Company, 60% of those approved for disability payments after a year of being disabled are also approved for Social Security disability benefits. After two years, 80% are approved by Social Security.
Once insured for at least 12 months, an employee who leaves a job may pay First UNUM directly to continue coverage for a period of time. However, First UNUM must receive a portability application within 30 days of the termination date.
