Work in Retirement

Rules for protecting clergy pension benefits

When clergy retire, they may be compensated for work in the Episcopal Church and continue to receive a monthly pension benefit as long as:

  • They do not work for pay in the church or institution from which they have retired.
  • Total compensation does not exceed $31,500 for 2007 and $31,500 for 2008. (Work outside the church does not impact a cleric's benefit from the clergy pension plan.)

For the Church Pension Fund's Board to consider an exception to these requirements, the bishop in the diocese where the cleric is called must:

  • Write to the Church Pension Fund's Committee on Ecclesiastical Offices Held by Beneficiaries, explaining why the individual's service in that position contributes to the mission strategy of the congregation or diocese.
  • Complete an application for Exception to the Rules for Work After Retirement.
  • Send the letter and application to:
Committee on Ecclesiastical Offices Held by Beneficiaries of the Fund
c/o The Rev. Patricia M. Coller
    The Church Pension Fund
    445 Fifth Avenue
    New York, NY 10016
