To receive the benefits of Long-Term Disability Insurance, you must be under the care of a physician, and your disability must be certified periodically by a claims representative.
Benefits begin when you have been unable to work for 12 months because of illness or accidental bodily injury. How long you receive payments depends on:
- how long you meet the definition of disability, and
- your age at the time you are disabled.
- Under age 60, benefits may continue up to age 65, while the disability continues.
- Age 60 to 64, benefits may continue for up to five years.
- Age 65 to 69, you may receive benefits up to age 70, or for at least a year if you are 69-1/2 when disabled.
- Age 70 and older, you may receive benefits for one year.
