Divorce

Before Retirement

  • A Qualified Domestic Relations Order (QDRO) gives the cleric's former spouse the right to receive all or a portion of his or her retirement benefits.
  • A QDRO has tax and legal benefits – the cleric should discuss this with his or her lawyer.
  • QDROs are subject to approval by The Church Pension Fund's Office of the General Counsel.
  • We cannot provide information regarding a cleric's pension benefits to a third party unless the cleric executes a Consent Form.
  • Read our Memo Concerning Divorce and Your Pension for more information.
  • To name a new beneficiary for Group Life Insurance, Lump Sum Death Benefit, and the pre-retirement survivor benefit, the cleric must complete new beneficiary forms.

After Retirement

The cleric's former spouse will receive a survivor’s benefit if:

  • He or she divorces while retired, and
  • The former spouse is named as his or her beneficiary under a Joint and Survivor option or other benefit option election.
  • To name a new beneficiary for Group Life Insurance, Lump Sum Death Benefit, and the pre-retirement survivor benefit, the cleric must complete new beneficiary forms.
