Investment Update

The primary role of the Church Pension Group’s (CPG) Investment Department is to ensure our ability to fund pension and related benefits for the participants and beneficiaries of various pension and other benefit plans sponsored by The Church Pension Fund (CPF). This responsibility extends for many decades into the future, which is why our investment program focuses on stable long-term investments that can deliver solid investment returns. The CPF Investment Department works with different investment managers and funds that bring unique insights and approaches to identifying attractive investments we believe will generate the desired long-term returns. As of September 30, 2017, CPF’s investment assets were approximately $12.9 billion, higher than they were a year earlier ($12.0 billion), with $4.0 billion invested in public equities, $3.7 billion in fixed income, and $5.2 billion in alternative investments. For the five years ended June 30, 2017, we are achieving our desired results, with CPF generating 9.0% versus 7.8% for the global benchmark that we reference to gauge our performance.

We use our status as an investor to support Episcopal Church values in three ways:

  • Positive impact investing,
  • Shareholder engagement, and
  • Thought leadership

You can learn about our efforts at Socially Responsible Investing. We have approximately $1 billion invested in or committed to impact investments such as affordable housing, urban development, and renewable energy initiatives in the developing world. Through shareholder engagement, we influence companies we invest in to operate more responsibly, and our thought leadership efforts seek to broaden shared understanding of best practices in social investing. Insights & Ideas – Centennial Conversations

We invite you to participate in a series of conversations that we are hosting in recognition of our 100 years of service to the Church. Insights & Ideas – Centennial Conversations is an open invitation to all interested people in the Church (e.g., clergy, lay employees, volunteer lay leaders, investment committee members). Insights & Ideas events cover two topics of interest to the Church and CPG: The Demographics of a Changing Church and Investing for Positive Impact. Our inaugural event was held on October 26 at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City, and we hosted another event in November at St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Minneapolis. They were both filled with engaging conversations where we shared and received a lot of excellent information. We invite you to join us for our upcoming events in Houston (January 24, 2018) and in San Francisco (February 7, 2018).

We will be videotaping each event and will share a compilation video online. Please visit Insights & Ideas to register and to learn more.
