As severe weather becomes more frequent and unpredictable, caring for Episcopal buildings requires a proactive approach. Protecting these spaces is not simply about preserving structures. It is about sustaining the life of the community.

The Church Insurance Companies (CIC) team works closely with institutions to identify risks, strengthen facilities, and address vulnerabilities before small issues become costly emergencies. On-site visits are a signature of CIC’s approach.

That in-person support can make a measurable difference. Jerry Byrd, a longtime sexton, recalls touring his church alongside a CIC representative. “They gave me ideas on building maintenance, on our pipe organ—a tremendous asset to our worship and our parish—and simple ways to care for stained‑glass windows…. Because of Church Insurance, I’m saving the church money.”

When crises do occur, that partnership continues. After a sprinkler failure caused more than $125,000 in damage at Zion Church in Vermont, CIC responded immediately. “The next day, they had someone on site,” Junior Warden David Brinson recalls. “[The] inspector told me, ‘My job is to make this place the way it was before this happened.’”

For David, the experience reshaped his understanding of what an insurance company can be. “They have become partners in a mission…. I have trust in them without reservation—and that is the greatest gift Church Insurance gives, not only to Zion, but to The Episcopal Church.

Experiences like these reveal the value of a trusted partner in prevention and recovery—but they also highlight what’s at stake.

To help reduce your properties’ risks, call your CIC representative to schedule a walk-through. In the meantime, start today with these four steps:

  1. Manage water effectively: Keep gutters clear, test sump pumps, and seal openings.
  2. Maintain roofs and exteriors: Inspect regularly and address minor damage early.
  3. Protect against wind and hail: Reinforce windows, roofing, and trim surrounding trees.
  4. Protect against freezing: Insulate pipes, maintain steady heat, and allow faucets to drip during extreme cold.
