The Rev. Canon Michael Barlowe serves as the interim pastor at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Edinburgh, Scotland. Prior to this, he was the 26th Secretary of the General Convention and Executive Officer. In his early career, he worked on Wall Street before pursuing a life in ministry.
A priest for over four decades, Michael held numerous leadership positions throughout the Church, led growing urban parishes, was the founding Dean of the Cathedral of St. Paul in Des Moines, Iowa, and was Canon to the Ordinary in the Diocese of California. He was also a member of the Anglican Consultative Council in 2019 and served as Provincial Secretary for over 10 years within the Anglican Communion.
He is involved in philanthropic work in the arts and the Church and is married to the Rev. Paul Anthony Burrows.
Michael was elected to his first term on The Church Pension Fund Board of Trustees in 2024.
He graduated cum laude from Harvard College, earned an MDiv from General Theological Seminary, and a doctorate from Church Divinity School of the Pacific (CDSP), where his research focused on church planting among young adults. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from CDSP for distinguished service to the Church.
