Medicare Supplement Summary

Although Medicare Part A and Part B provide coverage for medically necessary health services, you may wish to enhance that health insurance with a Medicare Supplement Health Plan. The Episcopal Church Medical Trust Medicare Supplement Health Plans help eligible retirees pay many out-of-pocket expenses, such as copayments, coinsurances, and deductibles. The plans also pay for some services not covered under Medicare.

We offer three Medicare Supplement Health Plans:

These plans are also available without prescription drug coverage for eligible retirees enrolled in Medicare Part D prescription coverage.

Medicare Sending New ID Cards

Medicare is mailing new Medicare cards beginning April 1, 2018, through April 1, 2019. The new cards will no longer include the Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) containing individuals’ Social Security numbers. Instead, a new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) number will be assigned to each individual.

Please note: UnitedHealthcare does not use Social Security numbers or HICNs on its ID cards. The UnitedHealthcare ID cards will not change.

Beneficiaries who have both Medicare and UnitedHealthcare plans will see the change on their Medicare card, but their UnitedHealthcare card will not change.

The new ID cards will help:

  • Address the risk of medical identity theft;
  • Safeguard taxpayer dollars;
  • Comply with Section 501 of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA), which mandates the removal of the Social Security number-based HICN from Medicare cards; and
  • Strengthen security for Medicare members by using an ID number that does not contain the member’s Social Security number.

Medicare beneficiary impact

Medicare beneficiaries who have a Medicare card will see the new number used on Medicare-related documents. The new Medicare numbers won’t change Medicare benefits. People with Medicare may start using their new Medicare cards as soon as they get them.

Medicare card mailing schedule

Medicare will begin mailing new Medicare cards in waves by geographic location and other factors. Starting in April 2018, Medicare enrollees will be able to check the status of card mailings in their area on Medicare.gov.

Beneficiaries should use the new card once they receive it. Effective Jan. 1, 2020, only the new card will be usable.
